What an oculoplastic surgeon does
Oculoplastic (oculofacial plastic) surgery is a subspecialty that joins ophthalmology with facial plastic surgery. An oculoplastic surgeon is first trained as an eye surgeon, then completes additional fellowship training dedicated to the eyelids, tear drainage system, orbit, and face.
That combination matters around the eye. The eyelids protect the cornea, spread the tear film, and shape expression. Surgery that improves appearance should also respect how the eye works — lid closure, tear film, and the natural shape of the eye.
The "facial" in oculofacial is easy to miss. Many people assume an oculoplastic surgeon works only on the eyelids, but the eyelids, midface, and jawline age as a connected whole. Dr. Ahn's practice includes deep-plane facelift and neck lift, so the eyes and the rest of the face can be planned together rather than treated in isolation.
Procedures in Torrance
Dr. Ahn performs surgical and non-surgical care of the eyelids, brow, face, and neck:
- Upper blepharoplasty — removes heavy, hooded upper-lid skin that crowds the eye.
- Lower blepharoplasty — addresses under-eye bags, often by repositioning fat rather than removing it.
- Asian eyelid surgery — creates or refines a natural double-eyelid crease, informed by training at Samsung Medical Center in Seoul.
- Ptosis repair — raises a drooping upper eyelid that sits too low over the eye and can block vision.
- Brow and forehead lift — restores brow position when a low brow is pushing down on the upper lid.
- Deep-plane facelift — lifts the deeper supporting layer of the face and midface, not just the skin.
- Neck lift — addresses neck laxity and the jawline, often alongside a deep-plane facelift.
- Tear-trough rejuvenation — softens the hollow beneath the eye with filler or fat.
- Fat grafting — restores lost volume around the brow and eyes using your own tissue.
- Orbital and reconstructive surgery — functional and reconstructive procedures of the eyelids and orbit.
- Injectables — non-surgical options for the upper face and eye area.
Many people come in asking about one thing — "my eyelids are droopy" — when several "ingredients" are involved: excess skin, a weak lid muscle, a low brow, or volume loss. Dr. Ahn evaluates each of these separately and explains what he sees, so you can decide which ones are worth treating.

What to expect at your consultation
Your first visit is a 45- to 60-minute consultation with Dr. Ahn. He measures eyelid height and brow position, reviews older photographs of you if you bring them, and shows you — on your own face — what surgery can and can't change. You leave with a written plan and a quoted cost.
Most eyelid procedures are performed under local anesthesia or light sedation and take about an hour, and you go home the same day. Swelling and bruising usually settle over one to three weeks.
